Brass CNC Machining

Brass, which is composed of copper and zinc, is highly popular due to its unique properties. Those include excellent corrosion resistance, aesthetic appeal, and machinability. The brass CNC machining is performed to produce high-quality parts with exceptional precision. Due to its easy cutting and low friction, its machining is relatively easy and ensures tight tolerances.

At Multi-Wins, we produce brass CNC machining parts and components. Our focus remains on meeting the exact custom specifications when creating products. Our company provides everything from CAD design to the final brass part, giving you peace of mind.

Common Brass Grades for CNC Machining

Brass is a mixture of zinc and copper. However, brass is divided into multiple types due to the difference in the proportion of copper and zinc. Moreover, the ease of CNC machining of each brass type or grade can differ. Below are the different grass types and their key characteristics:

1- C360 (Free-Cutting Brass)

This grade of brass is very popular due to its ease of cutting. Generally, materials that are easy to cut and weak. However, this C360 grade of brass has a small amount of lead.
This material increases its mechanical strength and improves its smoothing cutting. This grade’s rust resistance is also exceptional. This material is easy to cut, so its CNC machining is smooth and takes less time.
This enhances overall production and enables manufacturers to create more parts in a shorter timeframe. It features a brighter color and a golden finish, making it look attractive.

2- C260 (Cartridge Brass)

This brass type has a higher copper proportion, around 70%. Zinc makes up a total of 30% of this grade. Compared to C360, C260 is stronger, brittle, and less easily cut.
So, its CNC machining is not as smooth as that of C360. Although it is tough to machine this grade, it is not impossible because its machining is also widespread. Parts made with C260 brass are very durable against impacts.
The C260 and C360 look similar. However, the C260 has a more reddish-golden hue than a pure golden color.

3- C464 (Naval Brass)

This brass type is well known for its durability and long-lasting. It consists of 60% copper, 39% zinc, and 1% tin in its composition.
Moreover, manufacturers love its corrosion resistance. Therefore, it is generally used to make marine components, bushings, and bearing parts. However, CNC machining brass is challenging as it is stronger and brittle.
Moreover, it causes wear and tear on CNC machine cutters. It has a yellow-gold look and strongly resists tarnish. This brass grade doesn’t corrode even when exposed to salty water for an extended period.

Remember, other brass types, i.e., C280 and C230, are also available. However, their CNC machining is challenging, so manufacturers avoid using them. Generally, the brass C360 is preferred for making valves, gears, and screws. The use of C260 is primarily in the plumbing industry, where it is utilized to manufacture plumbing fittings.

C364 brass is very attractive, so it can also be decorative. Manufacturers use CNC machining of C364 brass to produce parts and components for the marine sector. We use all these brass types to create custom parts and products. Whether you prefer C360, C260, or C464, our expert team will help you make the final product..

Why is Brass a Suitable Option for CNC Machining?

Brass is an essential material for making various parts and components. What makes it stand out is its CNC machining, which is easier and more efficient. You might be wondering why brass machining is so smooth. Let’s look at the key features of brass that make it easily machinable.

  • Less Friction: Brass has a very low coefficient of friction. This means that if two brass parts rub against each other, they move smoothly without showing any resistance. Because of this, the manufacturer uses it to make bush and bearings using CNC machining.
  • Attractive Look & Feel: The physical appearance of brass is something many people love. It’s yellowish and golden and resembles gold. So, manufacturers make many decorative parts and products using CNC machining.
  • Excellent Machinability: As mentioned above, brass, especially the C360 grade, is easy to cut. The cutting tools cut this material quite easily without wearing it. Moreover, the cutting tools of CNC machines don’t require extra effort, which could cause machine overheating.
  • Tight Tolerances: The CNC machining of brass offers excellent precision and tighter tolerance of up to ±0.01mm. The reason is that brass is easy to cut. So, the cutters don’t have to put in more effort, which could affect their precision. So you get the part that will be precisely similar to the model you give.
  • Corrosion Resistance: Brass is a highly anti-corrosive material. This means it does not corrode even if it remains exposed to moisture for a long time. So, manufacturers create many plumbing and marine parts through their CNC machining. These parts stay in good shape for many years.
  • Cost Effectiveness: CNC machining of brass is a very cost-effective solution. This is due to the ease of cutting and machining brass. The cutting tools of machines don’t wear out or produce excessive heat. Moreover, brass is an inexpensive material, which is the reason for its extensive CNC machining.

Finishing Options for Brass CNC Machining Parts

With CNC machining, we produce high-quality parts with excellent precision. However, these parts don’t have ideal finishing and look slightly off. Therefore, we use different surface finishes to improve the look and feel of the parts. Without these, the parts’ sides or finish would be rough.

At Multi-Wins, we use the following surface finishing as per customers’ demands:

Finishing Type Advantage
Polishing Help get shin mirror-like surface of brass part
Nickel Plating We add thin nickel layer for increase corrosion resistance
Chrome Plating Help us achieve a glossy look and feel on brass parts
Gold Plating We only do this finishing for decorative parts
Sandblasting We blast fine particles to achieve a satin texture
Brushing Create fine, linear texture for a professional feel.
Clear Coating Invisible coat protecting brass from tarnishing
Chemical Coating We treat brass with different chemicals for its protection

Each surface finishing type we use for brass parts has unique pros and cons. Some types enhance the parts’ look, feel, and aesthetics. Conversely, others focus more on rust resistance and functionality. Whatever finishing type you need, we’re always up for it.

We know that deciding on a specific finishing type selection can be confusing. If you’re unsure which finishing type best suits you, worry not! We have a dedicated team of experts who are willing to help. They will understand your requirements and expectations and give you the best advice.
